Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates suggest that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
