The English and Wales Placed in the Same Group for RWC 2027 in Australia

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby icons including former All Black Dan Carter.

England together with Wales will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a major pool stage encounter in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Group F by Tonga and the Zimbabwean Sables.

This draw recalls their memorable clash in the group phase of the 2015 tournament, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Pool Draws

The Irish and the Scots have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Portugal, who each made a strong impression as underdogs in France, complete that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and top-ranked the Springboks until the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their assigned pool.

Knockout Ramifications

If the pools play out in line with the current global standings, other leading contenders like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and Ireland all the way to the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Draw Major Opener

Hosts Australia find themselves alongside their great rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Group A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on October 1st, 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to launch the event.

In other groups, reigning champions the Springboks have been paired with Italy, the Lelos and Romania. France are grouped with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Format for 2027

Los Pumas will face the Flying Fijians, Spain and Canada as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who took part in France.

This edition will feature a last-16 round for the very first time in Rugby World Cup history.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights early on, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – most likely Italy – in the last 16.

A total of four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
