Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.

Air Travel Interruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.

National Security Measures

Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Cross-Border Effects

At the same time, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.

Smuggling Techniques

In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."

Law Enforcement Objectives

Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

Regional Security Context

These airspace violations occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
